Revised rule changes the way anglers must measure striped bass.

Summary:

Revised rule changes the way anglers must measure striped bass.

Massachusetts has clarified how anglers should measure striped bass, and is encouraging other states to do the same.

The Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries (DMF) has made an important change to how striped bass must be measured—and it could improve the effectiveness of the stripers’ slot-based regulations.

As of now, all striped bass caught in both commercial and recreational fisheries must be measured with the tail lobes squeezed together. This decision comes after the Marine Fisheries Advisory Commission (MFAC) unanimously approved the DMF’s recommendation to clarify and standardize the method for determining a fish’s total length.

Spring is in full swing and the Stripers are moving North toward the Vineyard! There has been a lot going on to get ready for the season and a lot planned for the season. Check out the March 2025 Newsletter to stay up to date on everything. There is all kinds of info in this month’s edition like the club meeting notes/updates, Friends of Sengekontacket summary, MVSA upcoming events, In-house fishing derby and so much more!

The full link to the article is below.

You might also want to start getting that fishing tackle ready. Don’t wait until the Stripers are here and then we have to defend the coastline from the attack of the Blues 😉

Martha’s Vineyard Times

Eddie Doherty

2/26/24

Last year ended with sad news for the fishing community — we lost Frank Daignault — and now another acclaimed angler is gone.

I was part of a group introduced to Janet Messineo on Martha’s Vineyard when we all fished part of a tide with her on Chappaquiddick, where seven-foot swells were crashing up and down the sloped beach on a windy night. Janet, who succumbed to ALS at the age of 76 in December, was a very nice lady, and an expert surfcaster who was a genuine legend on the Island, so it was an honor to be able to wet a line with her. Born in Lawrence and raised in Salem, N.H., Janet took in her last breath of salt air in the Vineyard Haven home she shared with her husband Tristan Israel. In addition to being an iconic angler, Janet was an accomplished taxidermist, and became a powerful writer.
